So, this weekend I had a phone message from a friend asking me how much was too much to pay for hot dogs. I believe that was the entire purpose of the call. Now, I am not the kind of girl who can retain too much detailed information anymore. Not after having kids. I can barely remember my own phone number. I definitely don’t remember what a good price for a particular item is. Some people I know keep price books, and that’s a good idea if you’re detail-oriented and organized. I am neither, so I hunted down the stock-up prices from two blogs I trust so that I could share that info with you all.

Both have great information. However, when calling back my friend to answer her question, I did not consult either of those lists. Rather, I consulted one of my favorite iPhone apps from Kelly at Faithful Provisions. The app is called “Provisions” and it is available for free here. It lists what she considers a ceiling price for an item as well as a target price for the same item with sales and coupons. For example, for hot dogs, the “don’t pay more than” price is $1.25/pack, while the “aim for” price is $0.50/pack.

I use the Provisions app a lot while shopping and can heartily recommend it. And it’s free, so you can’t beat that!
