Blount Moms Today to offer engaging, informative resources
(Publisher's Note: Today we launch a multi-tiered new project at Blount Today. Blount Moms Today is a quarterly magazine, a website, a FaceBook page and a weekly page in Blount Today. The editor and coordinator of Blount Moms Today is Sarah Herron. On this first page, Sarah will introduce you to the concept and the team that is bringing this exciting venture to Blount County. Watch for our magazine launch on March 24.)

People say, “Motherhood is the hardest job on earth.” I think it is more like leaving earth and learning to breathe on a new planet. Being a mother is wonderful and overwhelming all at the same time. Blount Moms Today Web Editor, Rebecca Tatum, says, “Often the challenges are the joys!” Before you roll your eyes, she admits, “Sometimes my 2 year old makes a mad dash down the greeting card aisle throwing hundreds of cards over his head in one fell swoop. There is nothing joyful about that.”
In the midst of cleaning up messes and public embarrassment, there is the weight of intense responsibility that comes with this job. Our resident consumer expert, Christy Bramblett, aka “Thrifty Christy,” says, “I've never been this heavily invested in a job before. Failure means a lot more than monetary consequences, and that's scary!” I’ve found the most effective way to comfort those fears is to hang out with other moms. Rebecca agrees, saying, “We have advice thrown at us by well-meaning family members, friends and even strangers. A good network will pick you up and make you laugh.”
The Blount Moms Today project was born out of the idea that we need an engaging community of moms coupled with quick, easy resources. It is something I wish Blount County had when my children were born. Rebecca has spent years creating a resourceful, entertaining website for her group, Maryville Moms. When I talked to Blount Today Publisher Sherri Gardner Howell about developing a magazine and website for moms, I knew immediately I wanted Rebecca on the team. She now oversees web content and manages the all important calendar for our website: www.BlountMomsToday.com. Rebecca and I have developed a sisterhood of sorts from creating the two primary pieces of this project — print and web. She describes herself as the “crazy aunt.” I see her as a Godsend.
Blount Moms Today is an extension of the Blount Today family. Every person at Blount Today has supported us and sacrificed for us. The spirit of their work and commitment to our community set the tone for this project from the beginning. Sherri claims that the repeated phrase, “You all wear me out,” is a compliment. Whether or not that’s true, we feel loved. With her leadership, we are producing a magazine and website that moms will no doubt enjoy and appreciate. It will offer information on everything from recipes to local activities to money-saving tips.
I knew an important element to this project was having a regular contributor who could help moms navigate through the world of coupons and bargain hunting. I stumbled across Christy’s original blog, "Coupons Are Money." I contacted her because her writing style was simple, informative and comprehensive, but I was most impressed with intentions. “Thrifty Christy” is driven by her passion for frugality, simplicity and generosity. She says, "I love saving money. My goal is twofold: provide for my family and help others as much as possible. To that end, I post daily on deals, events and opportunities to give back.”
Then there’s Jen Hill, host of “Where to Go” Webisodes, which takes moms to area businesses by way of web video. She says, “I am so excited to host these webisodes for all those moms out there who are strapped for time and really want to "see" what a business might have to offer before making a trip.” Jen Hill produces and hosts the videos, which are available on our website and YouTube. She is also organizing events as part of our mission to create an interactive community of moms. The first event is our Launch Party on March 25 at Airport Hilton. The cocktail party gives moms a chance to dress up; although, moms can attend the party in their pajamas without fear of judgment.
We are producing a quarterly magazine, which I will be overseeing, along with the Blount Today team and our guardian angel, Tessa, who is all-things graphic. Each week I will create a Blount Moms Today page in the Thursday edition of Blount Today. The first issue of the quarterly magazine launches March 24 and will focus on getting moms ready for summer. I know from experience that after Spring Break, it’s time to plan for trips, summer camps and local activities. In July, our magazine will focus on ‘Back to School;’ October is all about ‘Holidays and Celebrations and January 2012 will be our first baby edition. The magazine will be inserted Blount Today for the newspaper's full Blount County run — home delivery and racks. In addition, we will have the magazine available as a stand-alone in 25-plus places throughout our community — places like doctors’ offices and coffee houses. If you have moms visiting your place of business and want the magazine, email me, and we will do our best.
‘Just a quarterly magazine’ is more difficult than I anticipated. Sherri said it’s like giving birth, and I’ve learned there is no epidural. It is a labor of love. This baby will be a great deal of work, but I believe it will be worth it in the end. Even so, I hope to never lose sight of my most important job — raising my sons. I love being a mom, and I love living in Blount County. It is one of the best places on earth to raise a family. My hope is that Blount Moms Today will help moms breathe a little easier.
